About Moorpark

Moorpark is a small city of about 36,000 people in eastern Ventura County, set among farm fields and chaparral hills between Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks. It grew around a railroad stop in the early 1900s, was long known for apricots and citrus, and became a city in 1983. The town keeps a relaxed, rural feel, with farms still at its edges.

The old center is High Street, shaded by a row of historic pepper trees, where the High Street Arts Center stages plays and musicals and a few restaurants occupy older buildings. Moorpark College is home to America's Teaching Zoo, where students in its exotic animal training program care for lions, primates, birds and reptiles and give public shows on weekends.

Families come for the farms: Underwood Family Farms and Tierra Rejada Ranch offer u-pick fruit and vegetables, farm animals and busy fall harvest festivals. Happy Camp Canyon Regional Park has long trails in the hills, and Grimes Canyon Road winds north toward Fillmore. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley is about 15 minutes away.

Best seasonMarch to May for green hills and strawberries, and October for pumpkin season on the farms.
Ideal stayOne day for the farms, the zoo and High Street.
ArrivingMetrolink and Amtrak Pacific Surfliner trains stop at Moorpark station; Burbank airport is about 40 minutes east.
