About Peña de Bernal

Bernal is a small town in the semi-arid highlands of Querétaro, built at the foot of the Peña de Bernal, a huge rock monolith that rises sharply above the surrounding plains and is counted among the largest in the world. The town and the rock together are a Pueblo Mágico, and they form part of a regional area recognized by UNESCO for the Otomí-Chichimeca traditions associated with sacred places in the region.

Climbing toward the rock is the main activity. A paved path and then a rocky trail lead to the hike to the chapel partway up, with sweeping views of the countryside; reaching the summit requires technical rock climbing. Back in town, cobblestone lanes wind past whitewashed buildings and small hotels. The Templo de San Sebastián is the principal church, and the Museo de la Máscara displays masks used in regional dances and festivals. Craft and sweet shops sell woolen goods woven on local looms, along with gorditas and candies. Around the area, guides offer cycling and quad bike tours, and photography of the monolith at sunset is a favorite pastime.

Bernal suits day-trippers, couples, and families exploring Querétaro's wine and cheese route. Ezequiel Montes and the surrounding vineyards are close, as is the spa town of Tequisquiapan. The spring equinox draws large crowds.

Best seasonOctober to May for dry weather and clear views; weekends and the spring equinox are crowded.
Ideal stayOne night is enough for the hike, the town and a nearby winery.
ArrivingMost visitors drive from Querétaro city, whose airport and bus station are the nearest major gateways.
