About Xochicalco

Xochicalco is an archaeological site on a terraced hilltop in western Morelos, southwest of Cuernavaca. It flourished after the decline of Teotihuacan, roughly between the seventh and tenth centuries, and became a fortified political and trading center. Its art shows influences from several Mesoamerican cultures, and the site is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

A visit usually begins at the site museum, which displays sculptures and explains the city's history before visitors climb the paths to the ruins. The Temple of the Feathered Serpent is the highlight, its base carved with undulating serpents and seated figures that many scholars link to calendrical and political themes. The main plaza is surrounded by pyramids, and the site also holds several ballcourts, altars and sweat baths. The observatory cave, a chamber with a vertical shaft, lets sunlight fall to the floor around the times of the zenith passage, and opening times can be limited. The view from the top spans the valleys in every direction.

Xochicalco is usually a day trip from Cuernavaca and pairs well with the Grutas de Cacahuamilpa or the lakes of El Rodeo and Tequesquitengo. Shade is scarce, so mornings are best, and hats and water are essential. History buffs will enjoy it most.

Best seasonOctober through April is dry and pleasant; morning visits avoid the strongest sun.
Ideal stayA half day to a full day, usually as an excursion from Cuernavaca.
ArrivingMost visitors drive or join a tour from Cuernavaca; public transport requires connections.
