About Kursk

Kursk is the administrative centre of Kursk Oblast in Russia, at the confluence of the Kur, Tuskar and Seym rivers, famous for the 1943 Battle of Kursk, the largest single battle in history, and for its Baroque and Neoclassical churches. Its top sights are the Sergievo-Kazansky Cathedral, the Znamensky Cathedral, the Kursk Bulge memorial complex and the Triumphal Arch.

Kursk is the oldest city in its oblast, first mentioned in written sources in 1032, and it is named among the Severian towns in The Tale of Igor's Campaign. The Mongols devastated it in 1239, and it revived with a new fortress built in 1596, becoming one of the largest trade and craft centres in southern Russia.

Kursk had 440,052 people in the 2021 census and has been the seat of regional administration since 1779. A railway has linked it with Moscow since 1868, Kursk Vostochny Airport has domestic flights, and buses, trolleybuses and trams run in the city, which lies on the main line from Moscow to Kharkiv.
