About Bryansk

Bryansk is the administrative centre of Bryansk Oblast in Russia, on the Desna River 379 km southwest of Moscow, famous as one of the oldest cities of the region and for its partisans of World War II. Its top sights are the Pokrovsky Cathedral on Pokrovskaya Hill, Chashin Kurgan, the Kurgan of Immortality and the Trinity Cathedral.

Bryansk takes 985 as its year of foundation, and the first settlement is thought to have stood on Chashin Kurgan before the city moved to Pokrovskaya Hill. It was part of Kievan Rus', the Mongol Empire and Lithuania in the Middle Ages, was contested by Moscow and Poland-Lithuania, and then became a major regional trading centre within Russia.

Bryansk had 379,152 people in the 2021 census and was named a City of Military Glory in 2010. A railway has served it since 1868, Bryansk International Airport lies 14 km southwest of the city, and buses and trolleybuses run in the city, which spreads along the right bank of the Desna.
