About Suffolk

Suffolk is the largest city by land area in Virginia, combining a historic downtown on the Nansemond River with wide farmland, small villages and a large part of the Great Dismal Swamp. Founded in 1742 and burned by British forces in 1779, it later grew into a rail town and became world famous as the home of Planters Peanuts, earning the nickname Peanut Capital of the World.

Downtown's historic district holds Victorian homes and several museums: Riddick's Folly, a Greek Revival house used as Union headquarters during the Civil War, the Suffolk Seaboard Station Railroad Museum in a restored 1885 depot, and the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts in a former high school. The Planters Peanut Center still sells freshly roasted peanuts.

Outdoors, the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge offers trails, wildlife and remote Lake Drummond, while Lone Star Lakes Park and Sleepy Hole Park are good for fishing and picnics. Each October the Suffolk Peanut Fest draws big crowds, and Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Williamsburg are within an easy drive.

Best seasonApril to June and September to October; early October for the Peanut Fest.
Ideal stayOne to two days for downtown museums and the Great Dismal Swamp.
ArrivingNorfolk International Airport is about 40 minutes away; US 58 and I-664 connect Suffolk with Hampton Roads.
