About Garner
Garner began as a wood-and-water stop on the North Carolina Railroad south of Raleigh, and the community of Garner's Station got its first post office in 1878. It was incorporated in 1883, lost its charter a few years later and was chartered again as the Town of Garner in 1905. U.S. 70, which runs through town, became the first paved highway built in North Carolina in 1917.
Today Garner is a growing suburb of Raleigh that still has a small historic downtown on Main Street, listed on the National Register. The Garner Performing Arts Center, set in a restored school auditorium, hosts concerts, plays and community events, and the town's veterans memorial honors local service members.
Parks are a big part of life here. Lake Benson Park offers a lakeside trail, boating and a large dog park, White Deer Park has a nature center and wooded paths, and Yates Mill County Park, with its restored water-powered gristmill, is a short drive northwest. Downtown Raleigh is only about 15 minutes away.
