Henderson grew up in the 1830s around the store and land of early settler Lewis Reavis, and it was named for his friend Leonard Henderson, a former chief justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court who lived nearby. Chartered in 1841 and reached by the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad, the town became a busy market for the bright-leaf tobacco grown across the region. When Vance County was created in 1881, Henderson became its county seat.
The tobacco and textile boom left a handsome downtown, now the Henderson Central Business Historic District, along with the 1908 fire station and municipal building with its tall clock tower and the Vance County Courthouse. The Henderson Institute, founded in 1887, was one of the leading schools for Black students in the state, and its historical museum keeps that story alive. Downtown's McGregor Hall brings concerts and shows to a restored building.
Henderson's biggest attraction is just north of town: Kerr Lake, a vast reservoir on the Virginia line with about 800 miles of shoreline. Its state recreation areas, including Satterwhite Point, offer swimming, boating, fishing and lakeside camping, making Henderson a favorite gateway for summer weekends on the water.
The historic downtown of the Vance County seat has brick commercial buildings from the tobacco boom era along Garnett Street, local eateries and small shops. It is quiet on most weekdays, so time a visit for an event or a show at McGregor Hall to see it at its liveliest.

A museum in a surviving building of the Henderson Institute, a school for African American students founded in 1887 and one of the most important in the region. Exhibits share the school's history, alumni and community life. Call ahead, as hours are limited.
A performing arts center in a restored historic building downtown, hosting touring musicals, concerts, comedy and local productions. It has comfortable seating and good acoustics for a smaller town venue. Check the season schedule and pair a show with dinner on Garnett Street.
A city park around a pond on the edge of Henderson, with a walking trail, fishing, a playground, picnic shelters and sports fields. It is a pleasant spot for an easy loop walk or a family afternoon, and ducks and geese are common around the water. Parking is free.
A state recreation area on the shores of Kerr Lake, a huge reservoir on the North Carolina and Virginia border north of Henderson. It has several park units with campgrounds, swimming beaches, boat ramps, picnic shelters and fishing. Summer weekends are busy, so reserve camping early.
