About Newport News

Newport News is an independent city on the Virginia Peninsula, stretching along the north shore of the James River where it meets Hampton Roads, one of the world's great natural harbors. English colonists knew the point by the 1620s, and the city grew in the 1880s when the railroad reached the waterfront and Collis Huntington founded the shipyard that still dominates its economy.

Today Newport News has about 185,000 residents. Newport News Shipbuilding is the only builder of the US Navy's nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, and the massive cranes along the river are visible across the city. Downtown's Victory Arch honors troops who passed through the port in both world wars, and the city's Mariners' Museum is one of the largest maritime museums in the world.

Beyond the shipyard, the city is surprisingly green. Newport News Park is one of the largest municipal parks east of the Mississippi, with lakes, trails and a Civil War battlefield, and the Virginia Living Museum combines a zoo, aquarium and botanical garden of native wildlife. Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown are all within about half an hour.

Best seasonApril to June and September to October for parks, waterfront walks and nearby historic sites.
Ideal stayTwo days for the Mariners' Museum, the Virginia Living Museum, Newport News Park and a day trip to Williamsburg.
ArrivingNewport News/Williamsburg International Airport is in the city; Norfolk International is about 30 minutes away; Amtrak serves the city.
