About Charlottesville

Charlottesville is a small city in central Virginia, set in rolling Piedmont countryside at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is closely tied to Thomas Jefferson, who founded the University of Virginia and built his home, Monticello, on a nearby mountaintop. Both are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The surrounding area is known for vineyards, orchards and historic estates.

At the University of Virginia, the domed Rotunda presides over the Lawn, Jefferson's "academical village," with its pavilions, gardens and distinctive serpentine brick walls. The nearby Corner has cafes and shops, and the university museums offer art and special collections. Monticello lies just southeast of town, with house tours and exhibits that address both Jefferson's ideas and the lives of the enslaved people who lived and worked there. The Saunders-Monticello Trail climbs through woods toward the estate, and the historic Michie Tavern serves Southern meals. James Monroe's Highland is close by, and Carter Mountain Orchard offers apple picking and views. Back in town, the brick Downtown Mall is a pedestrian street of restaurants and shops, anchored by the Paramount Theater, with IX Art Park nearby.

Charlottesville suits history buffs, food lovers and wine enthusiasts. Shenandoah National Park is a short drive west.

Best seasonApril to June and September to November for mild weather, gardens and harvest season.
Ideal stayTwo to three days covers Monticello, the university and the downtown area.
ArrivingCharlottesville-Albemarle Airport serves the city, and Amtrak trains stop downtown.
