About Fredericksburg

Halfway between Washington and Richmond on the falls of the Rappahannock River, Fredericksburg sits where so much of early American and Civil War history happened that it is hard to walk a block without passing a marker. George Washington grew up on a farm across the river, his mother and sister lived in town, and James Monroe practiced law on Charles Street.

In December 1862 the city became a battlefield. Union troops crossed the river under fire and then made repeated, failed assaults on Confederate lines behind a stone wall on Marye's Heights. The Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park now protects that Sunken Road, along with the national cemetery above it and Chatham Manor across the river.

The 40-block Old Town keeps its colonial and Federal-era streets, with antique shops, restaurants and small house museums like the Rising Sun Tavern and the Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop. Paths along the Rappahannock and the Gari Melchers estate at Falmouth add green space and art.

Best seasonApril to June and September to November, when walking Old Town and the battlefields is most comfortable.
Ideal stayTwo days to cover the battlefield, the Washington family sites and Old Town museums.
ArrivingAmtrak and Virginia Railway Express trains stop downtown; Washington Dulles and Reagan National airports are about an hour north by car.
