About Wilson

Wilson grew up around Toisnot Primitive Baptist Church and the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad, which reached the community in 1839. Chartered in 1849 and named for state senator Louis D. Wilson, it boomed on bright-leaf tobacco and by the early 1900s billed itself as the World's Greatest Tobacco Market, with huge auction warehouses lining the streets downtown. The city is also the birthplace of BB&T, now part of Truist.

Its best-known landmark today is far more playful. The Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park displays about 30 giant, wind-powered sculptures built by a local farmer and self-taught artist from salvaged metal, and it has become the centerpiece of a revived downtown. Nearby, the restored Edna Boykin Cultural Center, the Wilson Arts Center and the Imagination Station Science and History Museum, in an old federal building, fill out an easy walking loop.

East Wilson's Oliver Nestus Freeman Round House Museum tells the stories of the city's African American community, and green spaces include Toisnot Park and the Wilson Botanical Gardens. Fleming Stadium, a ballpark from 1939, recalls the city's long baseball history.

Best seasonApril to June and September to October; the whirligigs look their best on breezy days and are lit after dark.
Ideal stayHalf a day to one day covers the Whirligig Park, downtown museums and the Round House Museum.
ArrivingAmtrak trains stop at the downtown Wilson station, Interstate 95 passes just west of the city, and Raleigh-Durham International Airport is about an hour west.
