About Greenville

Greenville sits on the Tar River in eastern North Carolina and serves as the main hub of the state's coastal plain, with a large medical center and East Carolina University shaping daily life. Founded in the 1770s as Martinsborough and later renamed for the Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene, the town grew as a bright-leaf tobacco market, and brick warehouses from that era still line the streets west of downtown.

Today the city revolves around ECU. Fall Saturdays fill Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium with purple and gold, spring brings Pirates baseball at Clark-LeClair Stadium, and the university's music and theatre schools keep the calendar busy with concerts and plays. Uptown Greenville, the revitalized downtown between campus and the river, offers restaurants, breweries and live music.

Outdoors, the Town Common stretches along the Tar River with paths and summer concerts, greenways connect parks and neighborhoods, and River Park North offers trails, ponds and paddling across the water. Spring festivals such as PirateFest bring the whole region into town.

Best seasonMarch to May and September to November; football weekends in fall are lively but fill hotels quickly.
