About Kinston

Kinston was laid out in the 1760s on the Neuse River and named in honor of King George III, though after the Revolution the name was trimmed to Kinston. It became the seat of Lenoir County in 1791 and was home to Richard Caswell, North Carolina's first governor under the state constitution. During the Civil War, the Confederate ironclad CSS Neuse was built nearby and later scuttled in the river; its remains are now the centerpiece of a museum downtown.

In the 20th century Kinston grew as a tobacco market and textile town, and it has a proud musical heritage, honored at the Kinston Music Park with sculptures of local musicians who played with James Brown and other stars. The city has enjoyed a revival in recent years, with a food scene that drew national attention through the TV series A Chef's Life, filmed here, and a brewery and boutique hotel downtown.

Baseball is back at historic Grainger Stadium with the Down East Wood Ducks, and the Neuseway Nature Park offers trails, a nature center and a planetarium along the river.

Best seasonApril to June and September to October; summer evenings bring Wood Ducks baseball.
