About Smolensk

Smolensk is the administrative centre of Smolensk Oblast in western Russia, on the Dnieper 360 km west-southwest of Moscow, famous as one of the oldest Russian cities and for its great 16th-century fortress wall. Its top sights are the Smolensk Fortress Wall, the Assumption Cathedral on Cathedral Hill, the Svirskaya Church and Lopatinsky Garden.

First mentioned under the year 863, Smolensk lay on the trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks and was the capital of the Principality of Smolensk from the 11th to the 15th centuries. It belonged to Lithuania until 1514 and to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from 1611, becoming part of Russia again in 1654, and saw major battles in 1812 and 1941.

Smolensk had 316,570 people in the 2021 census. It stands on the M1 highway and the Moscow to Brest railway, with buses, trolleybuses, trams and marshrutkas in the city, and the city has no airport with regular passenger flights.
