About Ivanovo

Ivanovo is the capital and largest city of Ivanovo Oblast, set on both banks of the Uvod River about 250 kilometers northeast of Moscow. It had about 362,000 people at the 2021 census and is the youngest city on the Golden Ring of old Russian towns.

Poor soils pushed the people of the village of Ivanovo toward weaving, dyeing and printing linen, and by the late 17th century it was a large craft center. Mills grew up in the 18th century, cotton printing followed, and in 1871 Ivanovo merged with the Voznesensky Posad to form the town of Ivanovo-Voznesensk. Its many textile mills earned it the name of the Russian Manchester, and it took its present name in 1932.

Today visitors come for the textile heritage, from calico museums to old mill streets, and for one of the richest collections of 1920s and 1930s constructivist buildings in Russia, along with churches, museums and a domed circus by the river.
