About Warsaw

Few capitals have been rebuilt from rubble with as much care as Warsaw. After the city was almost completely destroyed in the Second World War, its people reconstructed the Old Town brick by brick, guided by old paintings and drawings, and the result is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Around it spreads the largest city in Poland, a confident mix of baroque palaces, socialist-era towers and gleaming glass offices along the Vistula.

History is everywhere, and the city faces it honestly. The Warsaw Rising Museum tells the story of the 1944 uprising, POLIN traces a thousand years of Polish Jewish life in the former ghetto district of Muranów, and the Palace of Culture and Science still dominates the skyline as a gift from Stalin. Fryderyk Chopin grew up here, and his music follows visitors from a dedicated museum to summer concerts beside his statue in Łazienki Park.

The lighter side is just as rewarding: royal gardens at Łazienki and Wilanów, riverside boulevards that fill up on warm evenings, a rooftop garden on the university library and food halls in restored old buildings.
