Tver is the administrative centre of Tver Oblast in Russia, at the confluence of the Volga and Tvertsa rivers 180 km northwest of Moscow, famous as the capital of a powerful medieval state and for its Catherine-era Volga embankments. Its top sights are the Imperial Travel Palace, the White Trinity Church, the Afanasy Nikitin Monument and the Stepan Razin Embankment.
After the great fire of 1763, Tver was rebuilt in stone to a regular plan drawn up in 1763 to 1766 by P. R. Nikitin, M. F. Kazakov, A. V. Kvasov and others, laid out on three rays fanning out from a central square. It became a model provincial town of the Russian Empire, with 60,000 people by 1913, and was called Kalinin from 1931 to 1990.
Tver had 416,216 people in the 2021 census. The Volga, Tvertsa and Tmaka split the city into quarters, the White Trinity Church of 1564 is its only pre-Petrine building, and buses and marshrutkas run in the city, with the nearest scheduled flights from Sheremetyevo in Moscow.
White Trinity Church is an Orthodox church in the Zatmachye district of Tver, Russia, and the oldest surviving stone building in the city. Built in 1564 by the Moscow merchant Gavrila Tushinsky and given seven domes in the 17th century, it was the Tver cathedral from 1944 to the 1990s.
Tver Transfiguration Cathedral is the cathedral of the Tver diocese in Tver, Russia, built in 1689 to 1696 on the site of a cathedral of 1285 to 1290, the first white-stone cathedral raised in Rus after the Mongol invasion. It was destroyed in 1935 and rebuilt on its site in 2014 to 2024.
Tver Resurrection Cathedral is the Orthodox cathedral of the Christ Nativity Convent in Tver, Russia, begun in 1913 for the Romanov tercentenary. Designed by Nikolai Omelyusty and consecrated on 17 April 1916 before Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna, it was the diocesan cathedral in 1992 to 2024.
Tver Ascension Cathedral is an Orthodox church in the Central district of Tver, Russia, built in stone in 1751 to 1760 on the site of earlier wooden churches. Badly hit by the great fire of 19 May 1763, it was restored by 1768, gained a bell tower in 1805 and reopened in 1993.
Tver Imperial Travel Palace is an 18th-century palace on Cathedral Square in the historic centre of Tver, Russia, built in 1764 to 1766 to a design by P. R. Nikitin on the site of the Tver kremlin. Made as a rest stop for the imperial family between St Petersburg and Moscow, it was rebuilt by Rossi.
Tver City Garden is a 9-hectare park on the right bank of the Volga in Tver, Russia, laid out on the protected archaeological site of the lost Tver kremlin. Formed in 1931 from the Palace Garden of 1776 and two later gardens, it has statues of Pushkin and Prince Mikhail and views across the Volga.
Stepan Razin Embankment is a riverside street on the right bank of the Volga in the centre of Tver, Russia, protected as a town-planning monument for its 18th-century buildings in a continuous facade. It was built to plans by a group of architects led by P. R. Nikitin and was renamed in 1923.
Tver Old Volga Bridge is a road bridge over the Volga in Tver, Russia, linking Mira Square with Cathedral Square, and the first permanent bridge across the river in the city. Designed in 1895 by G. F. Tochisky, it went up in 1897 to 1900 with metal trusses, and was 215.5 m long before rebuilding.
Tver Regional Art Gallery is the art museum of Tver, Russia, growing out of a public museum founded in 1866, one of the first in the Russian provinces, which opened on 9 August 1866. Since 1896, with a break from 1936 to 1961, it has been housed in the Imperial Travel Palace in the city centre.
Tver Drama Theatre is the regional academic drama theatre of Tver, Russia, in a Stalin-era building at 16 Sovetskaya Street opposite the City Garden. Local historians date the city's public theatre to 1787, and half of its more than twenty productions are based on Russian classic literature.
Afanasy Nikitin Monument is one of the best-known monuments of Tver, Russia, on the left bank of the Volga honouring the Tver merchant who travelled to India. Opened in June 1955, it is a 4 m bronze statue on a granite pedestal on a round platform shaped like a boat with a horse's head.
Tver Victory Obelisk is a war memorial on Victory Square in Zatmachye, Tver, Russia, where the Tmaka flows into the Volga, unveiled on 16 December 1970 for the 28th anniversary of the city's liberation. It is 45.5 m high, crowned with rostra and a torch bowl, with eight copper plates of bas-reliefs.
