About Vologda

Vologda is the capital of Vologda Oblast in northwestern Russia, on the Vologda River, and it is famous for the Kremlin and St. Sophia Cathedral begun by Ivan the Terrible, for its lace and butter and for its old churches and wooden mansions. About 314,000 people live in the city.

Vologda is first mentioned in 1264 as a possession of Novgorod, although its official founding year is 1147. It joined Moscow in 1397 and grew rich on the trade route from Moscow to the White Sea, and in 1555 English merchants opened an office here. Ivan the Terrible made the town the centre of his Oprichnina, began a stone fortress in 1566 and a great cathedral, but in 1571 he left suddenly and never came back.

Today Vologda is known for its wealth of old wooden architecture. Visitors walk around the Kremlin and Kremlin Square, see the frescoes of St. Sophia, visit the lace museum and the house where Peter the Great stayed, and go out to the Spaso-Prilutsky Monastery and the open-air museum at Semenkovo.
