About Helsinki

Helsinki, Finland's capital, sits on a peninsula and a scattering of islands along the Gulf of Finland. Founded in the sixteenth century, it was reshaped in the nineteenth century as the capital of the Grand Duchy of Finland under Russian rule, giving it a neoclassical center. Today it is known for modern architecture, design, saunas and a close connection to the sea.

Senate Square, with the white Helsinki Cathedral at its top, anchors the historic core, while the red-brick Uspenski Cathedral stands on the Katajanokka peninsula. Market Square on the harbor offers food stalls, the Esplanadi park leads into the city, and the Old Market Hall sells local delicacies. Ferries cross to Suomenlinna, an island sea fortress listed by UNESCO. Temppeliaukio Church is carved into solid rock, and the Sibelius Monument stands in a park honoring the composer. Seurasaari Open-Air Museum displays historic wooden buildings on an island. Around Töölö Bay, the Oodi library, Kiasma museum of contemporary art and other cultural venues form a lively strip. The Ateneum holds Finland's classic art, and the Design District and Kallio neighborhood add shopping, cafes and nightlife.

Helsinki suits travelers who enjoy design and a calm city pace. Summer days are long and bright, while winters are cold and dark.

Best seasonJune to August for long days, island trips and outdoor cafes.
Ideal stayTwo to three days covers the center, Suomenlinna and a sauna visit.
