About San Sebastián del Oeste

San Sebastián del Oeste is a former silver-mining town high in the Sierra Madre of western Jalisco. In colonial times it was a prosperous mining center, but when the mines declined its population fell sharply, leaving a quiet village of stone houses, cobblestone lanes, and old haciendas wrapped in pine and oak forest. Now a Pueblo Mágico, it preserves an atmosphere that feels little changed from a century ago.

The main plaza, with its bandstand and surrounding porticoed buildings, is the place to start, facing the Parroquia de San Sebastián Mártir. Wandering the cobblestone streets and old stone houses is the main pleasure, with small museums and shops tucked into historic homes. Hacienda Jalisco, a restored mining-era estate on the edge of town, now welcomes guests. Visitors can tour parts of the Santa Gertrudis Mine to understand the work that built the town, and the mirador trail climbs to sweeping views over the sierra. Hacienda Don Lalin is known for its coffee and preserves, and Bar Gariton is a long-standing spot to try raicilla, the local agave spirit.

San Sebastián suits slow travelers who appreciate history, mountain scenery, and cool evenings. La Estancia and the winding road in pass through forested country, and Mascota makes a natural pairing. Nights are chilly much of the year.

Best seasonNovember to April for dry days and clear mountain views; summer rain brings mist and green hills.
Ideal stayOne or two nights lets you settle into the village pace after the day-trip crowds leave.
ArrivingMost visitors drive or take a tour from Puerto Vallarta along the paved mountain road.
