About Lake Chapala

Lake Chapala is Mexico's largest natural freshwater lake, stretching across the highlands south of Guadalajara. Its northern shore is lined with small towns, most notably Chapala and Ajijic, which have attracted visitors since the early twentieth century and today host one of the largest communities of North American retirees in Mexico. The mild climate, mountain backdrop, and lakeside promenades give the area a relaxed, residential feel.

In Chapala, the Malecón is the social heart, with families strolling, vendors selling snacks, and boats waiting to ferry passengers to Isla de los Alacranes. The Parroquia de San Francisco rises near the waterfront, and the old railway station, the Antigua Estación de Ferrocarril, has been converted into a cultural center. A busy weekly tianguis brings market stalls to town on Mondays. A few miles west, Ajijic is known for colorful streets painted with murals, its own lakeside malecón, galleries, and a cultural center that hosts exhibitions and classes. Hikers head up into the hills toward the El Tepalo waterfall, which runs best in the rainy season.

The lakeshore suits travelers who want an unhurried base with good cafés, art, and easy walking. Many stay several weeks. The dry season brings sunny days, while summer rains turn the hills green.

Best seasonNovember to April for dry, sunny weather; July to September brings green hills and flowing waterfalls.
Ideal stayThree to five days allows time in both Chapala and Ajijic; many visitors stay far longer.
ArrivingGuadalajara International Airport lies on the road toward the lake, making it the usual arrival point.
