About Goleta

Goleta is a coastal city of about 32,000 people just west of Santa Barbara, set between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific. Long an agricultural valley known for its lemon and avocado orchards, it grew rapidly after World War II and incorporated as a city in 2002. The University of California, Santa Barbara and Santa Barbara Airport sit on its doorstep.

Goleta has a relaxed, outdoorsy character. Every winter thousands of monarch butterflies cluster in the eucalyptus trees of the Goleta Monarch Butterfly Grove on Ellwood Mesa, one of the largest overwintering sites in California. Goleta Beach County Park and its long pier, Haskell's Beach and the bluff-top trails offer surfing, fishing and sunset walks.

Inland, Lake Los Carneros park combines a quiet lake and trails with the historic Stow House and the South Coast Railroad Museum in the old Goleta depot. Old Town Goleta along Hollister Avenue has casual taquerias and breweries, and Santa Barbara's waterfront and the wild Gaviota Coast are both a short drive away.

Best seasonYear round; November to February for the monarch butterflies, September and October for the warmest beach days.
Ideal stayOne to two days, or a quieter base for exploring Santa Barbara.
ArrivingSanta Barbara Airport is in Goleta itself; Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner stops at Goleta station.
