About Murmansk

Murmansk is the capital of Murmansk Oblast in the far northwest of Russia and the largest city in the world north of the Arctic Circle. It lies mostly on the rocky eastern shore of the Kola Bay of the Barents Sea, and it had about 264,000 people in 2025.

Founded in 1916 as Romanov-on-Murman, the city took its present name the next year and grew into one of the largest ports in Russia. Thanks to the warm North Atlantic Current its harbor stays free of ice all year, the only such Russian port beyond the Arctic Circle. For its defense in the Second World War, Murmansk was named a Hero City in 1985.

Visitors come to see the nuclear icebreaker Lenin moored as a museum at the sea terminal, climb to the giant soldier known as Alyosha above the bay, and visit museums, a lakeside church and a lighthouse memorial. In winter the city lives through the polar night and its northern lights.
