About Kazan

Kazan is the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan in Russia, a city of about 1.3 million on the Volga and Kazanka rivers, famous for the UNESCO-listed Kazan Kremlin, the turquoise-domed Kul Sharif Mosque and a centuries-old mix of Tatar Muslim and Russian Orthodox culture. Founded around a thousand years ago, it was the seat of the Kazan Khanate until Ivan the Terrible captured it in 1552.

The white walls of the Kremlin enclose Kul Sharif, the Annunciation Cathedral and the leaning Syuyumbike Tower. Below them, pedestrian Bauman Street leads past the Epiphany bell tower to the baroque Peter and Paul Cathedral, while the Old Tatar Quarter keeps wooden houses, the 18th-century Marjani Mosque and cafes serving chak-chak and echpochmak pastries.

Across the Kazanka rise the bowl-shaped Kazan Family Center and the Palace of Farmers. Day trips lead to the island town of Sviyazhsk, the forest Raifa Monastery and the ruins of Bolgar. Summer brings river cruises, while snowy winters suit the museums.
