About Leipzig

Leipzig is the largest city in Saxony, lying on the plain of eastern Germany about 150 kilometers southwest of Berlin. It grew where two great medieval trade routes crossed, and its trade fair dates back to 1190, while between the 18th and 20th centuries it was the heart of German publishing.

Music runs deep here. Johann Sebastian Bach led the choir of St. Thomas Church from 1723 until his death in 1750 and is buried there, Felix Mendelssohn directed the Gewandhaus Orchestra, and the city's boys' choir has sung for some 800 years. In 1989 the peaceful Monday Demonstrations that began at St. Nicholas Church helped bring down East German communist rule.

Today Leipzig is a lively, creative city of restored arcades, courtyards and old industrial halls. Beyond the center stand the huge Monument to the Battle of the Nations and a famous zoo, while old open-cast mines to the south have been turned into lakes with sandy beaches.
