About Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur is the largest city in Jharkhand, India, famous as the steel city built by the Tatas and for green spaces such as Jubilee Park, Dimna Lake and the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary. It was India's first planned industrial city: work on Tata Steel's plant began in 1908, the first ingot was rolled in 1912, and in 1919 the town was named after Jamsetji Tata.

The city sits where the Kharkai River meets the Subarnarekha at Domuhani, ringed by the forested Dalma Hills. Jamsetji Tata asked for wide streets lined with shady trees and space for parks, and the result is visible in the 200-acre Jubilee Park with its lake, Jayanti Sarovar, and the Tata Steel Zoological Park.

Beyond the centre, Dimna Lake and the elephant forests of Dalma make easy half-day escapes, while the Tribal Culture Centre and the Rankini Temple near Jadugora reflect the region's Santhal, Ho and Munda heritage. Winter, from November to February, is the most pleasant season to visit.
