About Dhaka

Dhaka is one of the most densely populated cities on earth, a river capital of rickshaws, markets and constant motion where colourful cycle rickshaws still outnumber almost everything else on the road. It can be overwhelming at first, but its old quarters and warm hospitality reward patient explorers.

The city grew on the banks of the Buriganga River and flourished as a Mughal provincial capital in the 17th century, leaving monuments such as the unfinished Lalbagh Fort. Later centuries added the pink Ahsan Manzil palace of the Nawabs of Dhaka, an 18th-century Armenian church and the tiled Star Mosque. In 1971 Dhaka became the capital of independent Bangladesh, and Louis Kahn's monumental parliament building became a symbol of the new nation.

The best way in is on foot and by boat: through the crowded lanes of Old Dhaka, across the river from busy Sadarghat, and on to museums, the lakes of Hatirjheel and green Ramna Park. Biryani, kebabs and sweets give every stop a delicious excuse.
