About Mumbai

India's financial capital is built on what were once seven islands, joined over centuries by land reclamation into a long peninsula pointing into the Arabian Sea. Mumbai, known as Bombay until 1995, is home to the country's main stock exchange, the Bollywood film industry and some of the densest neighbourhoods on earth, all moving to the rhythm of packed suburban trains.

South Mumbai holds the grandest architecture. The Gateway of India faces the harbour, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus is a Victorian Gothic railway palace, and the Art Deco blocks along Marine Drive are part of a UNESCO-listed ensemble with the Victorian buildings around the Oval Maidan. Crawford Market and the stalls of Colaba Causeway show the city's trading side.

A ferry across the harbour reaches the rock-cut Shiva temples of Elephanta Island, while Sanjay Gandhi National Park keeps forest and ancient Buddhist caves inside the northern suburbs. Street food is a highlight, from vada pav to bhel puri on Girgaum Chowpatty at sunset. The monsoon, roughly June to September, brings very heavy rain.

Best seasonNovember to February, dry and less humid
Ideal stay3-4 days, including a half day for Elephanta
ArrivingChhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in the northern suburbs, or by long-distance train
