About Abbottabad

Abbottabad is a hill city in the Hazara region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, famous for its mild climate, Shimla Hill, Ilyasi Mosque and as the gateway to the Galiyat hill stations of Nathia Gali, Dunga Gali and Ayubia. It sits at about 1,250 metres in a green valley ringed by forested hills.

The town was founded in 1853 by Major James Abbott, a British administrator of Hazara, and grew as a garrison town; it is still home to the Pakistan Military Academy at Kakul. Its cantonment keeps old churches, schools and tree-lined roads, while the bazaars serve the whole Hazara region.

Visitors use Abbottabad as a base for the Galiyat, where pine forest, cool summers and trails such as the Pipeline Track, Mukshpuri Top and Miranjani Peak draw families and hikers. Thandiani, Harnoi and Sajikot Waterfall make easy day trips from the city centre.

Best seasonApril to October; snow in the Galiyat from December
Ideal stay3-4 days
