About Narasaraopet
Locals call Narasaraopet the gateway of Palnadu, and for good reason: this busy market town is where roads from the plains meet the dry hills of the Palnadu region. It is now the headquarters of Palnadu district in Andhra Pradesh, ringed by low hills that extend the Eastern Ghats, with red rocky soil and fierce summers.
The village was once called Atluru. Its present name honours Raja Malraju Narasa Rao, the local zamindar who owned much of the surrounding land. Narasaraopet became a municipality in 1915, a milestone marked by a centenary monument, and today it is a regional centre for trade, colleges and hospitals.
Most travellers come for Kotappakonda, the three-peaked sacred hill about 20 km away, where the Sri Trikoteswara Swamy temple draws enormous crowds for the Maha Shivaratri fair with its towering decorated prabhalu. Winter, from November to February, is the most comfortable season.
