About Pimpri-Chinchwad

Factories built Pimpri-Chinchwad, but saints and revolutionaries gave it its stories. This twin city on the north-western edge of Pune grew in the decades after independence into one of India's great industrial hubs, home to car, truck and engineering plants, and it now has its own municipal corporation, metro line and fast-growing residential districts such as Wakad, Pimple Saudagar and Nigdi.

Long before the factories, Chinchwad was a centre of Ganesh worship: the saint Morya Gosavi lived and is remembered here on the banks of the Pavana river. The town is also the home of the Chapekar brothers, whose 1897 shooting of a British plague official made them early heroes of the freedom movement, and Sant Tukaram's village of Dehu lies just to the north.

For visitors the city works best as a base on the Mumbai-Pune corridor: temples and memorials in old Chinchwad, the Science Park, family gardens in Nigdi and big new malls in Wakad. The hill forts and lakes of Maval are an easy drive west.

Best seasonOctober to February is pleasant; the June to September monsoon turns the nearby hills green.
Ideal stayOne day for Chinchwad's temples and memorials and the Science Park, or use it as a base for Pune and Maval.
ArrivingPimpri and Chinchwad stations are on the Mumbai-Pune suburban and main line, and the Pune Metro links the city to central Pune.
