Woodbury is a city in Washington County, Minnesota, about ten miles east of downtown Saint Paul. It was a quiet farming township until the 1970s and has since grown into one of the largest suburbs in the Twin Cities, known for its well-planned neighborhoods, many lakes and an extensive network of parks and trails.
The city's park system is its main draw for visitors. Carver Lake Park and Powers Lake Park offer lakeside trails, a beach and fishing, while Tamarack Nature Preserve protects a rare tamarack bog crossed by a boardwalk. Woodbury Central Park, next to city hall, has gardens and the Lookout Ridge indoor playground. The Woodbury Heritage House and Garden recalls the township's farming days.
Nearby, Lake Elmo Park Reserve has swimming, camping and long trails, and Afton State Park offers bluffs and prairie above the St. Croix River. Woodbury Lakes and other shopping centers along Interstate 94 provide dining and shopping close to the parks.
A city park around Carver Lake with a sandy swimming beach, fishing pier, picnic shelters and paved and natural trails through woods and prairie. In winter it is used for cross-country skiing and sledding. Arrive early on hot summer weekends, when the beach and parking lot fill up.
A quiet city park with a paved trail looping around Powers Lake, plus a fishing dock, picnic areas and a playground. It is a favorite spot for walking, running and birdwatching close to the shopping areas along Interstate 94. The loop is flat and easy for strollers and young cyclists.
A large Washington County park just north of Woodbury with a sand-bottom swimming pond, campground, archery range, fishing on Eagle Point Lake and long trails for hiking, horseback riding and cross-country skiing. A vehicle permit is required. Bring a picnic and plan to spend a day.
A nature preserve protecting a tamarack swamp, a rare wetland habitat for the Twin Cities, crossed by a boardwalk and surrounded by trails through woods and wetlands. Look for wetland birds, wildflowers and the golden color of the tamaracks in October. Stay on the boardwalk to protect the fragile bog.
A state park southeast of Woodbury on the bluffs above the St. Croix River, with rugged hiking trails through ravines, prairie and oak savanna, a swimming beach and hike-in campsites. Views over the river valley are best in fall. Wear good shoes, as some trails are steep, and buy a state park pass.
A city park next to city hall with gardens, a pond and an outdoor amphitheater, along with the Lookout Ridge indoor playground, a large climbing and play area for children that is open year-round. It is a great rainy-day or winter outing. Check the playground hours and admission fees.
A historic farmhouse and garden preserved by the city to show Woodbury's rural past, with displays about early settlers and farm life and a flower garden on the grounds. It opens for tours and special events on limited days. Check the city or historical society schedule before visiting.
An open-air shopping and dining center near Interstate 94 with national stores, local businesses and restaurants arranged along walkable streets and plazas. It hosts seasonal events and is a convenient place for lunch after visiting the parks. Parking is free and plentiful.
