About Mankato

Where the Minnesota River makes its great bend to the north, Mankato grew from a steamboat landing into the hub of south-central Minnesota. Its name comes from the Dakota word for the blue-green clay along the Blue Earth River, and its past holds both pride and grief: in December 1862, after the U.S.-Dakota War, 38 Dakota men were hanged here in the largest mass execution in American history.

Today Reconciliation Park marks that site, and the Mahkato Wacipi powwow in Land of Memories Park welcomes visitors each September. Downtown pairs a walkable sculpture tour with the Blue Earth County History Center, the Victorian R.D. Hubbard House and the childhood homes of Maud Hart Lovelace, who turned Mankato into the Deep Valley of her Betsy-Tacy books. Minnesota State University keeps the city young.

Outdoors, Minneopa State Park west of town has a waterfall, a stone windmill and a roaming bison herd, while the Red Jacket Trail and Mount Kato add biking, hiking and winter skiing in the river bluffs.

Best seasonLate May to early October; September brings the Mahkato Wacipi powwow and color on the river bluffs.
Ideal stayTwo days for downtown, Minneopa State Park and a ride on the Red Jacket Trail.
ArrivingAbout 80 miles southwest of Minneapolis on US 169; Minneapolis-Saint Paul International is the nearest major airport.
