Stevens Point has brewed beer on the same hill since 1857, and Point Special lager remains a central Wisconsin favorite. The city of about 26,000 sits on the Wisconsin River near the middle of the state, home to a University of Wisconsin campus that keeps downtown lively through the school year.
Lumbering built the town in the 1800s, and its brick commercial blocks around Mathias Mitchell Public Square still host a long-running farmers market. The university campus mixes historic Old Main with modern halls, and on its edge Schmeeckle Reserve protects a lake, wetlands and woods with a visitor center that houses the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame.
Outdoor life is a big draw. The Green Circle Trail loops roughly 27 miles around the area through forests and riverbanks, and riverside parks such as Bukolt and Pfiffner Pioneer offer fishing and summer concerts. Golfers come for SentryWorld and its famous flower-filled hole, and an outdoor sculpture park adds art to the woods.
One of the oldest continuously operating breweries in the country, known for Point Special Lager and craft sodas. Guided tours walk through the brewhouse and packaging line and end with samples in the hospitality room. Tours are popular in summer and on weekends, so book ahead online.
A roughly 280-acre nature reserve on the north edge of the university campus with Lake Joanis, wetlands and pine woods. Boardwalks and about five miles of trails are popular with walkers and runners, and deer are common. The visitor center includes the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame. Free entry.
A long loop trail of about 27 miles that circles Stevens Point and its neighbors, linking forests, prairies, the Wisconsin and Plover rivers and city parks. Most of it is paved or crushed stone, good for biking, running or walking short sections. Maps are posted at trailheads, and Schmeeckle is a good starting point.
The historic heart of downtown, lined with 19th-century brick buildings now holding taverns, cafes and shops. A long-running farmers market fills the square through the growing season, with Saturday mornings the busiest. The surrounding Main Street blocks are a pleasant walk, and evening brings lively bars.
A championship golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., famous for its par-3 16th hole surrounded by thousands of flowers. The complex also has a restaurant with patio views over the course, and non-golfers often visit just to see the gardens and eat. Tee times fill quickly in summer.
A wooded city park along the Plover River with hiking trails, picnic areas, a pond and part of the Green Circle Trail. In winter it is a local favorite for sledding, cross-country skiing and skating. In summer the shaded paths stay cool, and families gather at the shelters for cookouts and reunions.
A riverside park on the Wisconsin River north of downtown with a lagoon, boat launch, fishing piers and open lawns. The Green Circle Trail passes through, making it an easy stop on a bike ride. Sunsets over the river are lovely here, and the park hosts ball games and community events in summer.
A riverfront park just west of downtown with a band shell, paved paths and wide lawns on the Wisconsin River. Summer brings free concerts and festivals, and the river walk connects to the Green Circle Trail. It is a short stroll from the public square, so combine a picnic here with dinner downtown.
An outdoor sculpture park where works by regional and national artists sit along trails through woods and meadow. New pieces are added over time, and the park is free and open year-round. Wear good shoes, as some paths are grassy, and look for small installations hidden off the main loop.
The original building of the university, opened in 1894 as a teacher-training school and still used for offices today. Its brick facade, tower and lawn make it the most photographed spot on campus. Walk the nearby campus grounds and stop at the student union for coffee during the academic year.
