About Fayetteville

Fayetteville grew up at the head of navigation on the Cape Fear River and played an outsized role in early North Carolina: in 1789 the state's convention ratified the U.S. Constitution here, and the legislature chartered the University of North Carolina while meeting in town. Named for the Marquis de Lafayette, who visited in 1825, the city still has its 1832 Market House standing in the middle of downtown.

Today Fayetteville is best known as the home of Fort Bragg, one of the largest military installations in the world, and that connection shapes much of what visitors see. The Airborne & Special Operations Museum downtown and the North Carolina Veterans Park nearby honor the soldiers based here, while the Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex covers the region's longer history.

Hay Street is lined with restaurants, shops and galleries, and the Fayetteville Woodpeckers play minor league baseball at Segra Stadium a few blocks away. Green spaces include the Cape Fear Botanical Garden, the riverside Cape Fear River Trail and Clark Park, while spring brings the Dogwood Festival and early fall the International Folk Festival.

Best seasonMarch to May for dogwoods and azaleas, including the Dogwood Festival in April, and late September for the International Folk Festival.
Ideal stayOne to two days covers downtown, the Airborne & Special Operations Museum, the Botanical Garden and a riverside walk.
ArrivingFayetteville Regional Airport is just south of downtown, Amtrak stops at the downtown station, and Interstate 95 passes east of the city.
