About Prince Edward County

Prince Edward County is a rural peninsula, almost an island, on the north shore of Lake Ontario between Toronto and Kingston. Settled by Loyalists after the American Revolution, it was long a farming community known for canning and orchards. In recent decades it has reinvented itself as a destination for wineries, craft food, and art, while keeping its quiet back roads and old barns.

Sandbanks Provincial Park is the county's best-known landscape, with Outlet Beach and towering freshwater dunes along the lake. Wellington Rotary Beach is a smaller, local option, and the Little Bluff conservation area offers a cliff-top view over the water. Picton, the largest town, has a historic main street with shops and restaurants, while the Wellington Heritage Museum tells local stories. Bloomfield, between them, is lined with galleries and cafés. Lake on the Mountain, a small lake perched high above the Bay of Quinte, puzzles visitors with its elevated position, and the free Glenora Ferry crosses to the mainland nearby. Macaulay Mountain Conservation Area provides trails near Picton. Wineries and cideries scattered around the county anchor many itineraries.

The county suits couples, food lovers, and cyclists. Summer weekends can be crowded, especially at Sandbanks, so booking ahead is wise. Autumn harvest is a fine time, and many businesses scale back in winter.

Best seasonJune to October for beaches, farm stands and harvest-season wineries.
Ideal stayTwo to four days lets you mix wineries, beaches and small towns at an easy pace.
ArrivingMost visitors drive via Highway 401; the nearest VIA Rail station is in Belleville.
