About Pinehurst

Pinehurst was born in 1895, when Boston soda fountain magnate James Walker Tufts bought thousands of acres of cut-over sandhills forest and set out to build a healthful winter resort. He hired the firm of Frederick Law Olmsted, designer of New York's Central Park, to lay out a New England style village of curving lanes, village greens and cottages among the longleaf pines, and the Holly Inn opened its doors at the end of that year.

Golf soon took over. Scottish professional Donald Ross arrived in 1900 and spent nearly half a century shaping the resort's courses, above all the celebrated Course No. 2, which has hosted the U.S. Open several times as well as the U.S. Women's Open. Today the village is known as the Home of American Golf, and the Village of Pinehurst is a National Historic Landmark.

Beyond the fairways, visitors stroll the shops and cafes of the village center, visit the Tufts Archives and the Village Chapel, watch horses train at the historic Pinehurst Harness Track and wander the Sandhills Horticultural Gardens. Weymouth Woods and the longleaf pine forests of the Sandhills are close by, along with the charming towns of Southern Pines and Aberdeen.

Best seasonMarch to May and September to November bring ideal golf weather; spring is especially beautiful with azaleas and dogwoods.
Ideal stayTwo to three days for a round or two of golf, the village center and the gardens; one day is enough for a quick look around.
ArrivingRaleigh-Durham International Airport is about 75 minutes northeast, and U.S. Route 1 and U.S. Route 15-501 serve the area.
