About Terre Haute

Terre Haute is a city of about 58,000 people on the Wabash River in west-central Indiana, near the Illinois border. Its name means "high ground" in French, from the bluff where French explorers once traded. It grew in the 1800s on the National Road, the Wabash and Erie Canal and railroads, and became a center for coal, glass and distilling.

The Vigo County Courthouse, completed in 1888, is a grand building with a tall dome at the center of downtown. Indiana State University and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology give the city a college-town feel, and the Swope Art Museum has an excellent collection of American art in a 1901 Renaissance Revival building.

Terre Haute is the birthplace of labor leader Eugene V. Debs, whose home is a museum, and the first contour Coca-Cola bottle was designed here in 1915, a story told at the Vigo County Historical Museum. Fairbanks Park on the Wabash, the Deming Park trails and the Children's Museum are favorite stops.

Best seasonMay to October for river parks, festivals and college events.
Ideal stayOne to two days for downtown, the Swope Art Museum, the Debs Home and Fairbanks Park.
ArrivingIndianapolis International Airport is about an hour east; Interstate 70 passes the city.
