About Catonsville

Catonsville is a large, leafy community in Baltimore County, Maryland, on the western edge of the city of Baltimore. It grew in the 1800s along the Frederick Road turnpike and later became a streetcar suburb, and its Victorian houses, tree-lined streets and lively main street still give it a small-town feel. It is also home to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

The heart of town is Frederick Road, where Old Catonsville and the Central Catonsville and Summit Park historic districts hold shops, cafes, music stores and restaurants. The community is known for its big Fourth of July celebration and its strong local music scene.

Catonsville's southern edge drops into the Patapsco River valley, where Patapsco Valley State Park offers forest trails, a swinging bridge and the ruins of early railroad bridges. Nearby, the Benjamin Banneker Historical Park and Museum honors the self-taught Black scientist and almanac author. Downtown Baltimore, Ellicott City and BWI Airport are all within a short drive.

Best seasonApril to June and September to November for trails, river views and outdoor dining; early July for the Fourth of July celebration.
Ideal stayOne day, or a quiet base for exploring Baltimore and Ellicott City.
ArrivingBWI Airport is about 15 minutes away; Interstates 695 and 70 border Catonsville and downtown Baltimore is about 20 minutes east.
