About Arlington

Arlington is a compact county of about 235,000 people directly across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., and many of the capital region's most moving memorials stand on its hills. Once part of the original District of Columbia, it was returned to Virginia in 1846, and today Metro trains link its lively urban villages to downtown Washington in minutes.

Arlington National Cemetery is the nation's most famous military cemetery, with the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the changing of the guard and the Kennedy graves overlooking the city. Nearby stand the Marine Corps War Memorial, based on the Iwo Jima flag-raising photograph, the soaring Air Force Memorial and the Pentagon Memorial honoring the victims of September 11.

The Rosslyn-Ballston corridor, including Clarendon and Ballston, is packed with restaurants, bars and rooftop patios, and Mosaic Park adds green space in Ballston. Along the river, the Mount Vernon Trail runs past Gravelly Point, where planes roar low over the park on their way into Reagan National Airport, and Theodore Roosevelt Island is a quiet wooded memorial reached by footbridge.

Best seasonMarch to May for cherry blossoms and mild weather, and September to November for comfortable sightseeing.
Ideal stayOne to two days for the memorials and neighborhoods, longer as a base for Washington, D.C.
ArrivingRonald Reagan Washington National Airport is in Arlington, and Metro trains connect to D.C. and Dulles.
