About Leesburg

Leesburg is a historic town of about 48,000 people and the county seat of Loudoun County, Virginia, about 35 miles northwest of Washington, D.C. Founded in 1758 and named for the Lee family, it has one of the best-preserved downtowns in northern Virginia, with brick and stone buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries around the 1894 Loudoun County Courthouse.

History is everywhere. Ball's Bluff Battlefield Regional Park preserves the site of an October 1861 Civil War battle and one of the smallest national cemeteries in the country. Dodona Manor was the home of General George C. Marshall, author of the Marshall Plan, and the Thomas Balch Library holds a fine local history collection. Just outside town, Morven Park and Oatlands are grand estates with gardens and house tours.

Leesburg is also the gateway to Loudoun's wine country and horse country. The Washington and Old Dominion Trail runs through town for cyclists, and Leesburg Corner Premium Outlets draws shoppers from across the region.

Best seasonApril to June and September to November for gardens, fall foliage and wineries.
Ideal stayOne to two days for downtown, the estates and Ball's Bluff, longer for wine country.
ArrivingWashington Dulles International Airport is about 20 minutes southeast via the Dulles Greenway.
