About Kerala Backwaters

Behind Kerala's Arabian Sea shoreline lies a maze of brackish lagoons, rivers and man-made channels that stretches for long distances inland. Vembanad Lake is the largest body of water in the system, and around it lies Kuttanad, a farming region where rice is grown on reclaimed land below sea level and protected by dikes. Coconut palms line the waterways, and life in the villages still moves largely by boat.

The classic experience is an overnight trip on a kettuvallam, a converted rice barge turned houseboat, which usually departs from the jetties on Punnamada Lake near Alappuzha. Over a day the boat drifts past paddy fields, small churches and temples, and people washing clothes at the water's edge. Champakulam is known for its old church and its snake boat traditions, and Punnamada hosts the famous Nehru Trophy Boat Race. Around Kumarakom, on the eastern shore, visitors walk the bird sanctuary, take a canoe out to Pathiramanal Island or join village walks to see coir making and toddy tapping.

The pace is slow by design, which suits couples and travelers looking to rest between busier stops in South India. Southward, Ashtamudi Lake and Munroe Island offer quieter canal trips by country boat. Marari Beach, near Alappuzha, is a calm place to end a backwater stay. The monsoon is lush but wet.

Best seasonNovember through February brings dry, comfortable weather; the summer monsoon is green but rainy.
Ideal stayTwo to three days allows one houseboat night plus time around Kumarakom or Marari Beach.
ArrivingCochin International Airport near Kochi is the usual gateway, followed by a drive or train to Alappuzha.
