About Grand Canyon National Park

Carved by the Colorado River over millions of years, the Grand Canyon cuts about a mile deep through layered rock in northern Arizona, exposing an immense record of geological time. The national park protects both rims, and Native peoples including the Havasupai, Hopi and Navajo have deep ties to the surrounding land. The South Rim is open year-round and holds most services; the higher, forested North Rim is seasonal and much quieter.

Many first-time visitors begin at Mather Point, then follow the Rim Trail to Yavapai Point, where the Geology Museum explains the rock layers. Historic Grand Canyon Village has early twentieth-century lodges and the trailhead for the Bright Angel Trail, which switchbacks down toward the river. Hermit Road leads west to Hopi Point and Mohave Point, both favored at sunset, and ends at Hermits Rest, a stone building designed by Mary Colter. The South Kaibab Trail offers shorter day hikes to Ooh Aah Point or Cedar Ridge. Heading east, Lipan Point opens broad river views before Colter's Desert View Watchtower. Across the canyon, Cape Royal and Point Imperial show the North Rim's perspective.

Casual sightseers and serious backpackers both find plenty here, though hiking to the river and back in one day is strongly discouraged, especially in summer. A 2025 wildfire damaged North Rim facilities, so check its status before planning.

Best seasonSpring and fall offer cooler hiking weather; the North Rim typically opens only from mid-May to mid-October.
Ideal stayTwo to three days allows the rim viewpoints, a sunset and a partial hike below the rim.
ArrivingMost visitors drive in from Flagstaff or Williams; Phoenix and Las Vegas have the nearest major airports.
