About Yuma

Yuma is a desert city of about 100,000 people on the Colorado River in the far southwest corner of Arizona, close to both California and Mexico. It has long been a crossing point: Native peoples, Spanish explorers, gold seekers and steamboats all passed through the narrow river crossing here. Today Yuma is known as one of the sunniest cities on earth and as America's winter lettuce capital.

The Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park preserves the notorious prison that held outlaws from 1876 to 1909, with cells carved into the rock above the river. The Colorado River State Historic Park tells the story of the old Army supply depot, and the Ocean to Ocean Bridge, opened in 1915, was the first highway bridge across the lower Colorado.

Historic Downtown Yuma along Main Street has restored theaters, restaurants and the old brick buildings of the Brinley Avenue district, and the Sanguinetti House Museum shows the home of a pioneer merchant. Along the river, Gateway Park and the West Wetlands offer shady paths and paddling, and winter visitors flock in for warm sunshine, farm tours and the Lettuce Days festival.

Best seasonNovember to March for warm, sunny days; summers are extremely hot.
Ideal stayOne to two days for the prison, the riverfront and downtown.
ArrivingYuma International Airport is about 3 miles south of downtown, and Amtrak's Sunset Limited stops in town.
