About Oro Valley

Saguaro-studded foothills rising into the sheer granite face of Pusch Ridge make Oro Valley one of the most dramatic settings in southern Arizona. The town of about 47,000, on the northwest edge of the Tucson area, is known for golf resorts, dark night skies and quick access to Catalina State Park, whose trailheads lie just across Oracle Road.

The Hohokam farmed this desert long before ranchers arrived; you can walk among the remains of one of their villages at Romero Ruin. In 1874 German immigrant George Pusch built a steam-powered pump that turned a well into a cattle ranch, and the ridge above town still carries his name. Steam Pump Ranch is now a town-owned heritage site with a weekend farmers market.

Hikers head for Romero Canyon's seasonal pools or look for desert bighorn sheep in the Pusch Ridge Wilderness, families splash at the aquatic center, and Honey Bee Canyon Park hides ancient petroglyphs in a sandy wash.

Best seasonOctober to April for comfortable hiking; March and April for desert wildflowers and saguaro blooms in May.
Ideal stayTwo to three days for hiking, a resort stay and a round of golf.
ArrivingTucson International Airport is about 40 minutes south by car; Phoenix Sky Harbor is about 1 hour 45 minutes northwest.
