About Nyíregyháza

Nyíregyháza is the lively capital of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County in the far northeast of Hungary, a university town on the sandy Nyírség plain and the main gateway to the corner where Hungary meets Ukraine and Romania. Its story took a distinctive turn in 1753, when Count Ferenc Károlyi invited Slovak-speaking Lutheran settlers, later nicknamed Tirpák, to repopulate the town, and their farming hamlets still dot the countryside around it.

The centre is compact and green, with Kossuth Square, the Lutheran Big Church, the grand County Hall and a Greek Catholic cathedral all within a short walk. The Jósa András Museum tells the regional story and honours the painter Gyula Benczúr, who was born here, as was the writer Gyula Krúdy.

Most visitors, though, head for Sóstó, the leafy spa and lake district on the northern edge of town. Here you will find the celebrated Nyíregyháza Zoo, an open-air museum village, thermal and adventure baths and long woodland walks, making the city an easy two-day stop on the way to Tokaj or the Carpathians.

Best seasonMay to September for Sóstó, the zoo and outdoor bathing; December brings an Advent market to the centre.
Ideal stayTwo days: one for the city centre, one for Sóstó.
ArrivingDirect trains run from Budapest in roughly three hours; local buses link the centre with Sóstó.
