About Belgrade

Belgrade is the capital and largest city of Serbia, set where the Sava River flows into the Danube. It is famous for Belgrade Fortress and Kalemegdan Park above the rivers, for the vast Church of Saint Sava and for its lively cafe, kafana and river nightlife.

Belgrade is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe. The Celts named it Singidun, and it became the Roman city of Singidunum before passing between Byzantine, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Ottoman and Habsburg rulers. Its name means white city, and it later served as the capital of Yugoslavia.

Start at the fortress with the Victor Monument, Ružica Church and Nebojša Tower, then follow Knez Mihailova Street to Republic Square and the taverns of Skadarlija. The Nikola Tesla Museum, the Museum of Yugoslavia and Gardoš Tower in Zemun fill another day. Spring and early autumn are the best seasons.
