Prague, the capital of Czechia, spans the Vltava River with a historic center that escaped major destruction in the twentieth century. Gothic spires, Baroque churches and Art Nouveau facades fill its winding streets, and the city served as the seat of Holy Roman emperors under Charles IV. Its compact layout makes it easy to explore on foot.
Old Town Square is the center of the historic core, framed by the Church of Our Lady before Týn and the Old Town Hall, home to the medieval astronomical clock, whose hourly display draws crowds. Charles Bridge, lined with statues, crosses the river toward Malá Strana. Josefov, the Jewish Quarter, preserves several synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery. Across the river, Prague Castle, one of the largest castle complexes in the world, encloses St. Vitus Cathedral and the small houses of Golden Lane. Malá Strana's Baroque streets lead uphill to Strahov Monastery and its historic library halls. Petřín Hill has gardens and an observation tower resembling the Eiffel Tower. In the New Town, Wenceslas Square was the site of key events in modern Czech history, and the Dancing House by Frank Gehry and Vlado Milunić adds a modern touch by the river.
Prague suits travelers interested in history, architecture and beer culture. Early mornings help avoid crowds on Charles Bridge. Day trips include Kutná Hora and Český Krumlov.

The historic heart of Prague, surrounded by pastel facades, the Gothic towers of the Church of Our Lady before Tyn and the Baroque St. Nicholas Church. It hosts markets at Christmas and Easter. Tip: climb the Old Town Hall tower for a fine view over the square.
A medieval clock on the Old Town Hall, first installed in 1410 and still working. On the hour, figures of the apostles appear in its windows while a skeleton rings a bell. Tip: the show is short, so watch from a spot near the front, and book a tour to see the mechanism inside.
A 14th-century stone bridge across the Vltava, lined with 30 Baroque statues and towers at each end. It links the Old Town with the Lesser Town and is busy with artists and musicians. Tip: cross it at dawn for an empty bridge, and climb the Old Town Bridge Tower for views.
A modern building on the riverbank designed by Vlado Milunic and Frank Gehry in the 1990s, with two towers that seem to dance together, nicknamed Fred and Ginger. It has a gallery and a rooftop bar. Tip: the rooftop terrace offers a good view of the river and castle.
One of the largest castle complexes in the world, home to Czech kings and presidents. Highlights are the Gothic St. Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace and St. George's Basilica. Tip: the grounds are free, while a ticket covers interiors; the guard changes on the hour.
A tiny lane of colorful houses built into the castle walls, once home to guards and craftsmen. Franz Kafka lived for a time at No. 22. The rooms now show how people lived and worked through the centuries. Tip: entry is included in the castle ticket, and it is quieter late in the day.
The former Jewish town, with the Old-New Synagogue, still in use since the 13th century, and the Old Jewish Cemetery with layers of tilted gravestones. The Jewish Museum runs several synagogues. Tip: synagogues are closed on Saturdays and Jewish holidays.
The Lesser Town below the castle has Baroque palaces, gardens and the green-domed St. Nicholas Church. Uphill, Strahov Monastery holds beautiful historic library halls and a brewery. Tip: the library halls are viewed from the doorway, so it is a quick but worthwhile stop.
A long boulevard in the New Town, the scene of key moments in Czech history including the 1989 Velvet Revolution. At its top stand the St. Wenceslas statue and the National Museum. Tip: the museum's main building has a grand staircase and a dome with city views.
A green hill above the Lesser Town with orchards, rose gardens, a mirror maze and the Petrin Lookout Tower, which looks like a small Eiffel Tower. A funicular runs up from Ujezd. Tip: climb the tower stairs for one of the best views of Prague, especially in the evening.
A historic fortress on a cliff above the Vltava south of the center, with the twin-spired Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul, a cemetery where Dvorak and Mucha are buried, and ramparts with river views. Tip: it is far calmer than the castle, perfect for a relaxed walk.
A large park on a plateau north of the Old Town with famous views over the bridges of the Vltava. It has a giant metronome where a Stalin monument once stood and a busy summer beer garden. Tip: the beer garden near the Hanavsky Pavilion is a classic spot at sunset.
