About Sutton

Sutton is a small mountain town in Quebec's Eastern Townships, close to the Vermont border and overlooked by the Sutton range of the Appalachians. Settled by Loyalists and later shaped by both English- and French-speaking communities, it has an artistic, independent spirit. Galleries, studios and cafés share the main street with older wooden buildings, giving the town a relaxed, creative feel.

Rue Principale is the natural starting point, with shops, restaurants and a tourist office that also showcases local artists. A Loyalist heritage walk explains the town's early history. Most visitors, though, come for the mountain. Mont Sutton is known for gladed skiing in winter and for hiking in warmer months, and Round Top, reached through the Parc d'environnement naturel de Sutton, rewards walkers with broad views over the valleys and across into Vermont. Plein air Sutton and the treetop courses of Arbre Sutton add outdoor adventures.

Cyclists follow sections of the Route Verte through farmland and forest, and the Sutton wine route leads to small vineyards in the surrounding hills. The tiny Chapelle Sainte-Agnès at Glen Sutton, set among vineyards, makes a scenic detour. Sutton suits hikers, skiers and travelers who like a slower village pace. Fall foliage is excellent, while winter brings a ski-town buzz.

Best seasonLate September to mid-October for fall color, or January through March for skiing.
Ideal stayTwo or three days allows hiking, a winery visit and time in the village.
ArrivingMost visitors drive from Montreal, via Autoroute 10 and country roads toward the Vermont border.
